tar American gymnast Simone Biles’ decision to withdraw from the ongoing Tokyo Olympics owing to mental concerns has set the precedent for athletes around the world. She has been lauded by many for her decision and has been continuously receiving support messages from the sports fraternity albeit amid significant criticism from US fans.
Biles, who is one of the best gymnasts in the world, withdrew from the Artistic Gymnastics team event and individual all-round final, citing mental health concerns. The four-time Olympic gold medallist seemed destined for another gold at the Tokyo Games before deciding to not participate any further in the showpiece event.
Indian cricket team’s head coach Ravi Shastri has joined the bandwagon and sent a message to Biles, backing her over her decision to withdraw from the Olympics. In a tweet, Shastri said Biles doesn’t owe any explanation to anyone for her decision and that she should take her time before deciding to make a comeback.
Shastri also lauded Naomi Osaka, who had earlier withdrawn from the French Open citing mental health reasons. “Take your time @Simone_Biles. You have earned the right to owe it to yourself at this tender age. 48 hours or 48 days it might take. Just do it Champion. You owe no explanation to no one,” Shastri wrote in a tweet.
After her withdrawal from the final of the individual all-around gymnastics competition, it is uncertain if Biles will take part in the rest of the Tokyo Games. The USA Gymnastics Association stated that Biles was withdrawing after further medical evaluation. She has qualified for the finals of all four events and might still turn up to compete in any of them
Simone will continue to be evaluated daily to determine whether or not to participate in next week’s individual event finals. We wholeheartedly support Simone’s decision and applaud her bravery in prioritising her well-being. Her courage shows, yet again, why she is a role model for so many,” the USA Gymnastics Association said in a statement.
