The government has recently given its nod to the Income Tax Department’s PAN 2.0 Project, a comprehensive initiative to revamp and digitize the Permanent Account Number (PAN) and Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number (TAN) ecosystem. The PAN 2.0 Project is also in sync with the Digital India vision, promoting a seamless transition to environmentally sustainable, paperless, and digital processes. Moreover, the PAN 2.0 Project envisions PAN as a universal identifier, bridging digital platforms across select government agencies, thereby propelling India’s digital transformation agenda forward.

“As per the provisions of the Income-tax Act, 1961, no person can hold more than one PAN. In case a person holds more than one PAN, he/she is obliged to bring it to the notice of the Jurisdictional Assessing officer and get the additional PAN deleted/de-activated. In the PAN 2.0, with the improved systems logic for identification of potential duplicate requests for PAN and centralized and enhanced mechanism for resolving the duplicates would minimize the instances of one person holding more than one PAN,” said the ministry of finance in a press release.

Holding a duplicate PAN can attract a penalty of up to Rs 10,000, as per Section 272B of the Income Tax Act, 1961. To avoid incurring a penalty, you can submit the necessary forms to authorized PAN service providers, such as NSDL or UTIITSL, to voluntarily surrender your duplicate PAN card. Before surrendering the duplicate PAN, link your valid PAN with Aadhaar and update it across all relevant financial platforms, including bank accounts, investment portfolios, and tax filings.

PAN 2.0: Key Features

Unified Services: The Income Tax Department has combined PAN and TAN services into one platform, making it easier for taxpayers to manage both.

Free e-PAN Cards: Taxpayers will get digital PAN cards with QR codes via email for free. The government will give you physical PAN cards at a small extra cost.

Enhanced Security: The system has strong checks to detect and prevent duplicate and fake PAN numbers, ensuring accurate identification.

Simplified Access: You can now access all PAN services from one easy-to-use website.

Immediate Updates: The system checks and updates information quickly and safely, making it faster and easier for everyone.
