The government has recently given its nod to the Income Tax Department’s PAN 2.0 Project, a comprehensive initiative to revamp and digitize the Permanent Account Number (PAN) and Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number (TAN) ecosystem. The PAN 2.0 Project is also in sync with the Digital India vision, promoting a seamless transition to environmentally sustainable, paperless, and digital processes. Moreover, the PAN 2.0 Project envisions PAN as a universal identifier, bridging digital platforms across select government agencies, thereby propelling India’s digital transformation agenda forward.
“As per the provisions of the Income-tax Act, 1961, no person can hold more than one PAN. In case a person holds more than one PAN, he/she is obliged to bring it to the notice of the Jurisdictional Assessing officer and get the additional PAN deleted/de-activated. In the PAN 2.0, with the improved systems logic for identification of potential duplicate requests for PAN and centralized and enhanced mechanism for resolving the duplicates would minimize the instances of one person holding more than one PAN,” said the ministry of finance in a press release.
Holding a duplicate PAN can attract a penalty of up to Rs 10,000, as per Section 272B of the Income Tax Act, 1961. To avoid incurring a penalty, you can submit the necessary forms to authorized PAN service providers, such as NSDL or UTIITSL, to voluntarily surrender your duplicate PAN card. Before surrendering the duplicate PAN, link your valid PAN with Aadhaar and update it across all relevant financial platforms, including bank accounts, investment portfolios, and tax filings.
