Taliban emerging as a reality; hope they follow ‘real Sharia’ which upholds women’s rights: Mehbooba Mufti

Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti called on the Taliban to set an example for the world to follow that form of Sharia law where women’s rights are respected. The Jammu Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party president said the Taliban, which are now in power in Afghanistan, should shun their interpretation of the Sharia law.

“Taliban is emerging as a reality. They had an image of anti-human rights during their first rule. They can set an example for the world if they follow the real Sharia law which includes women rights and not their interpretation of Sharia,” the PDP chief said in Kulgam.

Speaking at a public event, Mufti said if the Taliban fail to change their ways and do what they did during the 1990s, then things will become difficult for both Afghanistan and the world.

Mufti’s remarks came hours after another former J&K CM Farooq Abdullah said he was hoping the Taliban to deliver ‘good governance’ while following Islamic principles.

“I hope they (Taliban) will deliver good governance and follow Islamic principles in that country (Afghanistan) and respect human rights. They should try to develop friendly relations with every country,” said the National Conference chief while responding to a question on Afghanistan.

However, the National Conference later denied media claims that Farooq had supported the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan.

The Taliban had taken control of Kabul on August 15 and last night, they announced the government formation in the Central Asian country to be headed by interim prime minister Mullah Hasan Akhund.
