Delhi Police is likely to charge two-time Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar with the destruction of evidence in connection with the murder of 23-year-old wrestler Sagar Dhankar. Dhankar was killed during a brawl at Delhi’s Chhatrasal Stadium on May 04. Sushil and his associates have been accused of killing the wrestler. Sushil is currently in the custody of Delhi Police having been arrested a week ago.
As per a report in India Today, the Delhi Police has claimed that Sushil tried to destroy evidence related to the case including mobile phones and video footages. The Delhi Police is likely to add 201 IPC against the two-time Olympic medallist for the destruction of evidence. Sushil is also reportedly not cooperating in the investigation and his mobile phone is yet to be discovered.
On Monday, the Delhi Police Crime Branch team which is investigating the case took Sushil to Haridwar for further investigation. Sushil, who was absconding after the murder of the 23-year-old, had changed location several times to avoid arrest and reportedly was hiding in Haridwar for a few days. He reportedly got rid of his mobile phone in Haridwar.
Sushil has already been suspended by the Northern Railways after being accused of murder of Dhankar and his police custody was extended by two days by a Delhi Court on Saturday. Meanwhile, the court also extended his associate Ajay’s custody by four days for police interrogation.
Trouble seems to be mounting for Sushil in the murder case ever since he was arrested by the Delhi Police. Earlier, video footage of the incident from the Chhatrasal Stadium had surfaced where the star wrestler could be seen assaulting 23-year-old Rana with a stick along with his friends in the parking lot of the stadium.
Rana, who sustained grave injuries during the brawl had succumbed to death while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Delhi. Sushil, who is one of the prime accused, has maintained that his intention was not to kill the 23-year-old.
