Tensions Rise In Goa As Christians Demand RSS Leader’s Arrest Over Communal Remarks

Protests broke out across parts of Goa on Sunday, with members of the Christian community demanding the arrest of Subhash Velingkar, the former Goa chief of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), over his controversial remarks about St Francis Xavier, a revered Catholic missionary. Demonstrators gathered in Old Goa, calling for action against Velingkar, and urged others to join in a larger protest planned for Margao, South Goa.

Clashes and Detentions in Margao
Late on Saturday, tensions escalated as protesters blocked a national highway in Margao and clashed with police forces, resulting in the detention of five protesters. Amid the growing unrest, authorities from the Goa Church urged for peace and restraint, while calls for action against Velingkar continued to intensify.

Political Reactions

Rahul Gandhi Criticizes BJP’s Role
Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, condemned the BJP for allegedly fostering communal tensions in Goa. In a tweet, Gandhi accused the BJP of “provoking Christians” and backing Sangh organizations that have called for an economic boycott of Muslims. He further stated that the people of Goa, and India as a whole, are united against this divisive agenda. Gandhi’s remarks have further fueled the ongoing political debate around the issue.

Goan Catholic Community’s Response

Statement from the Council for Social Justice and Peace (CSJP)
The Goan Catholic community, represented by the Council for Social Justice and Peace (CSJP), issued a strong statement condemning Velingkar’s remarks. The CSJP highlighted that his statements not only hurt Catholics but also people of other faiths who revere St Francis Xavier. The council called on authorities to take strict legal action against Velingkar for attempting to disturb communal harmony in Goa.

Legal Proceedings Against Velingkar

Multiple Complaints Filed
More than 12 cases have been filed against Subhash Velingkar for “hurting religious sentiments” following his media statements criticizing St Francis Xavier, whose relics are housed at the Basilica of Bom Jesus Church in Old Goa. Despite these complaints, police have yet to arrest Velingkar. On Saturday, he filed for anticipatory bail, but the court refused interim relief, scheduling the hearing for Monday.

The situation remains tense as authorities attempt to manage the protests and maintain peace in the state.
