Shooter Avani Lekhara creates history, becomes first woman from India to clinch gold in Paralympics

At Tokyo Paralympics 2020, Indian shooter Avani Lekhara created history by winning a gold medal in the R2 – Women’s 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1 final. Avani equalled the world record (249.6) to win the Women’s 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1 final and register her name in history books.

The 19-year-old created history by becoming the first woman from India to win a Paralympics gold medal. This is also India’s first gold medal at Tokyo Paralympics 2020.

She’s the fourth Indian athlete to win a Paralympics gold after swimmer Murlikant Petkar (1972), javelin thrower Devendra Jhajharia (2004 and 2016) and high jumper Thangavelu Mariyappan (2016).
