Pope Francis Dies At 88: Timeline Of His Final Days And Important Moments Of Life

Pope Francis (88), who was recovering from double pneumonia, passed away on Monday, April 21, at his home in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta. Vatican administrator, Cardinal Kevin Ferrell announced, “Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow, I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of His Church.”

On Sunday, Pope Francis delivered his Easter wishes from the balcony of St Peter’s Basilica to a large crowd gathered in Vatican Square. Ahead of this, he had a private meeting with US Vice President JD Vance. Notably, he was the first Pontiff from the Jesuit Order and the 1st from outside Europe since the 8th century.

March 13, 2013: Elected as 266th pope – the first Jesuit, the first from the Americas, and the first to take the name of Francis.

February 14, 2025: hospitalized after a bout of bronchitis worsens. Later develops a complex lung infection and double pneumonia.

March 2, 2025: The Condition becomes stable and he continues to receive medical care

March 4, 2025: Suffered two episodes of ‘acute respiratory insufficiency’

March 5, 2025: Rested well during the night and woke up after 8 am at Gemelli Hospital, Rome 

March 17, 2025: Vatican releases Pope’s first photo at the chapel in Gemelli hospital

March 13, 2025: 12th anniversary of his election as pope while hospitalized.

March 23, 2025: Discharged from the hospital; Makes first public appearance since hospitalized

April 20, 2025: Delivers Easter message from the balcony of St Peter’s Basilica; Met US Vice-President JD Vance

April 21, 2025: Dies at his residence
