Luggage allowance is as important as getting a train ticket, as the Indian railway network is one of the busiest in the world. Millions of passengers travel through trains daily with heavy luggage. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the weight limits and other regulations of railways for a hassle-free journey. Well, the luggage allowance varies by travel class, and you must know them to avoid last-minute surprises during the trip.

Indian Railways Luggage Limits

Passengers traveling in AC First Class are allowed to carry up to 70 Kilograms of luggage. On the other hand, AC 2-Tier Sleeper/First class passengers are permitted up to 50 Kilograms. Meanwhile, the limit for AC 3-Tier sleeper/AC chair car and Sleeper Class is up to 40 Kilograms. Second-class passengers are allowed to carry about 35 Kilograms of luggage. These luggage allowance limits are set to ensure passengers do not carry extra items or incur additional charges. Therefore, it is advisable to only carry the specified weights.

Key Details Passengers Must Know

Indian Railways charge a fee at 1.5 times of luggage rate if the set limit exceeds. The maximum limit includes free allowance. According to Indian Railways, if your baggage marginally exceeds the free allowance, you will be liable to pay the normal luggage rates applicable as per the class of travel. A marginal allowance penalty will be levied if detected. Passengers must keep in mind the prescribed details and book their excess luggage in the baggage office before commencing the journey.

NOTE: Free allowance is not applicable for items like scooters, cycles, etc. Offensive articles, empty gas cylinders, dead poultry, explosive, dangerous, inflammable articles, acids, and other corrosive substances are not allowed to be booked as luggage. Children between 5 and below 12 years of age are allowed to carry half of the free allowance, subject to a maximum of 50 Kgs.
