Pakistan Assembly condemns attack on Hindu temple; member says ‘Muslim community failing in its duties’

Pakistan Assembly has strongly condemned the attack and vandalism on a Hindu temple in district Rahim Yar Khan of Punjab province of Pakistan. The Pakistan Assembly passed a resolution condemning the attack on the Hindu temple and assured stern action against the culprits.

“National Assembly passed a resolution to condemn attack on a #HinduTemple in village #Bhong of Rahim Yar Khan & assured stern action would be taken against culprits. Parliament is committed to protect rights of #minorities & provide full protection to their places of worship,” National Assembly of Pakistan tweeted.

While speaking in the Pakistan Assembly, Dr Ramesh Vankwani, Patron-in-chief Pakistan Hindu Council Member of National Assembly, condemned the repeated attacks on Hindu temples, saying such incidents bring disrespect to the country.

“Enough is enough” message should be put forward by the Parliament, Vankwani said while raising the issue of temple attack in the Assembly.

Pakistan’s Supreme Court today slammed authorities for failing to stop an attack on the Hindu temple and ordered the arrest of the culprits.

While presiding over the matter, Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed said that the incident has tarnished the image of the country worldwide.

“A Hindu temple was demolished, and just think what they must have felt. Imagine what would have been the reaction of Muslims, had a mosque been demolished,” the Chief Justice said while questioning Inspector General of Police (IGP) Inam Ghani, who summoned to appear before the court.

A mob of over hundred people, armed with sticks, stones attacked the temple and damaged the idols after a court ordered the release of a nine-year-old Hindu boy, who was arrested for allegedly urinating in a local seminary.

The boy was booked for blasphemy but later released on bail for being a minor.

Taking string note of the temple attack incident, India on Thursday summoned the Pakistani charge d’affaires and lodged a firm protest.

“We have seen disturbing reports on social media of a violent mob attack on a Ganesha temple in Rahim Yar Khan in Punjab province of Pakistan. The mob attacked the temple, desecrated the holy idols and set fire to the premises,” External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said.

“The Pakistani charge d’affaires was summoned and a firm protest was lodged expressing our grave concerns at this reprehensible incident and the continued attacks on the freedom of religion of the minority community and their places of religious worship,” Bagchi said
