Deadlock continues despite withdrawal of traffic advisory: Mizoram CM to raise matter with Assam

Mizoram Chief Secretary Lalnunmawia Chuaungo on Friday said it has taken up the issue of restriction of traffic from Assam government’s travel advisory of July 29 that they had withdrawn last night.

“Travel advisory that they (Assam) had issued on July 29, was withdrawn last night. However, movement of traffic has not started till now. We’ve taken up these issues with Asaam government. So let us hope that this blockade is removed soon,” he said.

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, meanwhile, said, “There are many issues that remain unresolved. At same time, you have to move ahead. On Assam’s side, we have certain issues that need closure. I’m sure that at the right time, I’ll be able to see to it with Mizoram CM and resolve those issues.”

Assam and Mizoram decided to take forward the initiatives taken by the Union Home Ministry and their CMs to remove tensions prevailing around the inter-state border and to find lasting solutions to disputes through discussions. The Assam government on Thursday said they will revoke advisory issued earlier against travel to Mizoram.

The Assam and Mizoram governments issued a joint statement, agreeing to maintain peace in the inter-state border areas. The two states agreed to not send their respective forest and police forces for patrolling, domination, enforcement or for fresh deployment to any areas where confrontation has taken place recently.

Border tensions between the two states witnessed violent clashes on August 26. At least six policemen of the Assam Police and a civilian lost their lives during the violence that erupted. Chief Ministers of the two states also engaged in a bitter war of words on social media and blamed each other for unrest, prompting Home Minister Amit Shah to intervene. Shah urged the two chief ministers to resolve the conflict peacefully.
