On this day in 2018: MS Dhoni captained Team India for the final time in ODIs

One of the most successful captains in the history of the game, MS Dhoni enjoyed great success while at the helm of affairs and captained Team India to multiple milestones. The only captain to win all three ICC trophies played during his time, Dhoni led India across all three formats for the majority of his career.

Dhoni’s Test captaincy career spanned for 6 years while he led India in the white-ball formats for nearly a decade. Dhoni had retired from Test cricket in 2014, which marked an end to his captaincy career in the longest format.

In ODIs and T20Is, Dhoni only gave up captaincy and played international cricket for another 31 months. Since Virat Kohli was Dhoni’s deputy for nearly 5 years, he was an automatic pick to lead the Men in Blue. Soon, the selectors named Kohli’s deputy and handed the charge to Rohit  Sharma.

He continues to lead the Men in Blue whenever Kohi is on rest and will soon take over as the T20I captain. In 2018, Rohit led the team on multiple occasions and also captained the side to title wins in Nidahas Trophy and Asia Cup.

During the Asia Cup, Rohit also took a rest for the league stage fixture against Afghanistan. Since Shikhar Dhawan, his deputy for the tour, was also rested, Dhoni took over the charge for the final time in his career. The decision came as a big surprise but it gave Dhoni an opportunity to achieve a major milestone of leading Team India in 200 ODIs.

By doing so, he became only the 3rd captain to lead a side in 200 ODIs. The list is topped by Ricky Ponting, who led Australia to 165 wins in 23 ODIs. He is followed by Stephen Fleming, who captained New Zealand to 98 wins in 216 ODIs. Dhoni captained India to 110 wins in 200 ODIs.

Dhoni’s captaincy career didn’t end on a high note as Afghanistan drew with India. The Men in Blue bounced back and defeated Bangladesh in the final to win the 50-over tournament.
