Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has announced a significant new initiative aimed at providing cashless treatment for victims of road accidents in India. This scheme is designed to ensure that individuals injured in road accidents can receive immediate medical care without the burden of upfront costs.

Key Features Of The Cashless Treatment Scheme

Immediate Coverage: Victims will be eligible for cashless treatment within 24 hours of reporting the accident to the police. This prompt action is crucial for ensuring timely medical assistance.

Financial Support: The scheme will cover medical expenses up to ₹1.5 lakh for a maximum of seven days following the accident. This financial support aims to alleviate the stress on victims and their families during critical moments.

Compensation For Families: In cases of hit-and-run accidents resulting in fatalities, the families of victims will receive a compensation amount of ₹2 lakh. This measure is intended to provide some financial relief during a difficult time.

Implementation Timeline

The cashless treatment scheme is set to be rolled out nationwide by March 2025. It follows a successful pilot program that was conducted in several states, including Assam, Punjab, and Haryana, where over 6,840 individuals benefited from the initiative.
Government’s Commitment to Road Safety

During the announcement, Gadkari emphasized the government’s commitment to improving road safety in India. He highlighted alarming statistics from 2024, noting that approximately 1.8 lakh people lost their lives due to road accidents, with many fatalities linked to not wearing helmets.

Future Developments

The National Health Authority (NHA) will oversee the implementation of this scheme, coordinating with police and hospitals to ensure smooth operation. Additionally, Gadkari mentioned plans to introduce new safety technologies for vehicles, such as systems to alert drivers when they are falling asleep.

This cashless treatment scheme represents a proactive step toward addressing the challenges faced by road accident victims and underscores the government’s focus on enhancing road safety measures across the country.
