5-Day Working For Banks: Will It Happen Soon? Check The Latest Developments

The debate on 5-day workweek for banks in India is a topic of widespread speculations. This could potentially change the current 6-day work schedule for the banks. However, bank employees have been pushing for a 5-day workweek for a long time. The Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) and bank unions agreed to a 5-day workweek in December 2023. They finalized plans in the 9th Joint Note on March 8, 2024, which includes Saturdays and Sundays off. However, pending government approval is a problem.

Reports had hinted at a possible approval of the 5-day workweek for bank employees by December 2024, but that timeline is now exceeded. With no official deadline announced, the wait for government approval continues. It will be interesting to watch when the government officially approves the pending proposal.

5-Day Working For Banks: What For Customers?

To ensure uninterrupted customer service, bank employee unions plan to compensate for the reduced workweek. Bank employee unions have promised to extend their daily working hours by approximately 40 minutes.

Challenges Ahead

Regulatory Approval: Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) approval is one of the most important aspect of this development.

Smooth Banking Services: Implementing a 5-day workweek for banks across India’s vast and diverse landscape poses significant challenges. This can potentially disrupt seamless banking services.

Union And Management: A mutual agreement between employees and management on working hours, salaries, and operational changes is essential for a smooth implementation of the 5-day workweek system.
