In a rather shocking update and a huge loss for Indian cinema, veteran Kannada actress Jayanthi has left for her heavenly abode. In her career spanning decades, the actress had been a part of numerous films, spanning across Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Hindi and Marathi languages. She was also one of the ruling Kannada actresses back in the day.

Jayanthi’s son Krishna Kumar confirmed the news of her demise.

Speaking to Bangalore Times, Krishna Kumar revealed that his mother Jayanthi passed away in her sleep. She was recovering from a few illnesses.

Social media is flooding with condolence messages on Jayanthi’s demise. Her industry peer, actress Sudharani Govardhan posted happy photos with the veteran star from the past, followed by a long note. It could be read, “Jayanthi mummy will miss calling you, will miss your warm hugs, your lovely voice, your laugh, your caring nature and concern. I will always cherish and consider it my great fortune and blessings when you said my voice sounds like your voice during ANAND dubbing. All the nail polish that I got for you,I will never get to give it to you!!! Will miss you terribly #abhinayasharadejayanthi #missyou #terribly #mummy #warm #hugs #voice #laugh #caring #nature #concern #nailpolish”

Last year, Jayanthi was rushed to a hospital in Bengaluru after she complained of severe asthma and breathing issues. She was put on the ventilator for the time being but her health later became stable. The veteran Kannada actress had tested negative for Covid-19.

During the nationwide lockdown last year, Jayanthi was stuck in Hampi. She would video call her friends and family and also soaked in nature during her stay.

End of an era

Jayanthi’s film career started in 1963 with Jenu Goodu and since then, there has been no looking back for the actress. From the year 1962 to 1979, actress Jayanthi had shifted focus to Tamil films from Kannada, which proved as an impetus to her fame.

Over the next many years, she starred in leads to prominent supporting roles. Not many know but the veteran actress is the recipient of 7 prestigious Karnataka State Film Awards between 1973 to 2006. She was also honoured with Filmfare Awards South in 1973 and 1976, respectively. Apart from this, Jayanthi was also bestowed with the Padmabhushan Dr B. Sarojadevi National Award in 2017.
