K-pop star Giant Pink apologises, issues clarification after courting controversy for recent song with verses from Bhagavad Gita

K-pop rapper Giant Pink has courted controversy after a recent song of hers was noticed to have a few verses from the sacred Hindu scripture Bhagavad Gita. For the unversed, Giant Pink released her recent track PINK on December 29, 2021. While she was initially applauded for her rap and dance moves, a few fans noticed the usage of holy scriptures that formed the background to the musical lyrics. This did not sit well with Indian K-pop fans.

Desi netizens took to social media to voice their disappointment, demanding an apology from Giant Pink and her parent agency SM Entertainment, expressing shock that a holy scripture like the Gita could be used as an ‘aesthetic’ for a music video.

The singer has now taken to social media to apologise for the usage of Gita verses and issue a clarification, writing, “Hello, I’m Giant Pink. There’s something I want to talk about my new song, ‘Pink.’ I would appreciate it if you could take your precious time to read it. Thank you:)”

She then referred to K Jun, the producer of the song’s statement and wrote, “When I started working on this song, I heard about Giant Pink’s pregnancy. First, in the intro, with the lyrics “Thank you for coming to me”, It contains congratulations to Giant Pink’s child.”

The statement further stated that when the producer was working on the bridge part of the song, he saw that Giant Pink was popular in Southeast Asia and wanted to give meaning to fans and Giant Pink among them. He added, “So I translated the word birth into Hindi, searched YouTube, and borrowed a part.”

According to the producer, the reason he borrowed that part was that when he hears Korean while listening to foreign songs, it is really nice for him to hear that it is fascinating.

K Jun further stated, “I wanted to give fans that kind of welcome and I wanted to put a meaningful message into it. I didn’t know at all that it was a sacred story with a religious message. I didn’t try to use it only for slander or musical elements. I wanted to celebrate Giant Pink’s pregnancy and for Southeast Asian fans. I apologize for using it without looking into it in more details. It was done entirely based on my personal judgment and has nothing to do with GiantPink and SM.”

He went on to conclude by adding, “I sincerely apologize once again to all the fans who are hurt and mad about it. The Song ‘Pink’ is currently being modified. I sincerely apologize once again.”

Giant Pink in a separate statement further wrote, “The message to the producer said, There’s a story about Indonesia. There was an error in the translation. I fixed it right away. No matter what the reason is, I sincerely apologize to India.”
