J&K: Gulmarg Fashion Show Sparks Controversy Amid Ramazan Observances

In a surprising turn of events, a fashion show held in the picturesque winter resort of Gulmarg during the holy month of Ramazan has ignited a firestorm of criticism from various quarters, including prominent religious and political figures. The event, which showcased models in revealing attire, has drawn ire for being at odds with the deeply rooted cultural and religious sentiments of the region.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Kashmir’s chief priest, took to social media to express his outrage, stating, “The organization of an obscene fashion show in the holy month of Ramzan is outrageous. This is not only disrespectful but also intolerable in a valley celebrated for its Sufi traditions and spiritual heritage.” He called for accountability from those responsible for the event, emphasizing that such displays in the name of tourism promotion are unacceptable.

Echoing these sentiments, senior National Conference leader and Member of Parliament Aga Ruhullah described the images from the show as shocking. “This is a clear example of cultural invasion masquerading as tourism. It shows a blatant disregard for the sentiments of the Kashmiri people,” he remarked, urging swift action against both the tourism officials involved and the event organizers, Shivan Narresh.

Social activist Raja Muzaffar Bhat voiced his concerns regarding the event’s implications on local values. “Who sanctioned this nude fashion show in Gulmarg during Ramzan? The images of semi-nude participants parading on snow are appalling. It raises questions about the intentions behind promoting tourism at the expense of our moral and ethical fabric,” he stated.

In light of the growing outrage, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has sought an immediate report from local authorities regarding the incident. He acknowledged the understandable shock and anger among the populace, stating, “The images I have seen demonstrate a complete disregard for local sensitivities, especially during this sacred month. I have instructed my office to liaise with local authorities for a detailed report within 24 hours, after which appropriate actions will be taken.”

The controversy surrounding the fashion show has also spilled into the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, where lawmakers expressed their discontent over both the event and recent violent incidents in Billawar Kathua. Abdullah confirmed that an investigation has been ordered, while opposition leader Sunil Sharma raised questions about potential conflicts of interest, noting that the venue belongs to a relative of the Chief Minister.

The controversial fashion show was held alongside the National Khelo India Games 2025 in Gulmarg. Although the government stated that the event was not linked to Khelo India and was purely a private affair, many people are questioning how the show was allowed under the watch of the administration, especially given the significant security setup in place for the ongoing Khelo India Games.
