History Repeats? Barcelona At Risk Of Facing Harsher UEFA Sanctions After 2023 FFP Fine

The UEFA Champions League may throw another challenge at Barcelona in the 2025-26 season as they might be barred again for not following Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules according to the reports published by The Times. It has been reported that UEFA is set to publish a list of clubs that have violated their financial rules. Barcelona could face serious repercussions again if they are found on that list. So far, no official ruling on the sentence has been given, but indications suggest there might be only two possible options.

UEFA Set To Announce Findings By Mid-June Following Financial Review

“We recently completed the financial audit process conducted by UEFA every two years,” a club source told ESPN. “The conclusions and possible consequences arising from this audit have not yet been notified to the club.

“The main discrepancy lies in the fact that UEFA does not consider some operations as ordinary income, the so-called levers, unlike the criteria of LaLiga, which does consider them as ordinary operating income.”

“The UEFA Club Financial Control Body will review all relevant cases and further announcements regarding updates and settlements will be made around mid-June,” the governing body said.

Barcelona Fined By UEFA In 2023-24 Season

It should be pointed out that because of misreporting its profit in the 2022 business year, UEFA gave Barca a €500,000 penalty in 2023. The club challenged the decision yet the CAS turned down its appeal last october noting that the fine was actually not that harsh. The CAS impressionly declared that further wrongful conduct will face even stronger penalties. It explained that another rule breach by the club next year would be considered recidivism and would face a stronger penalty.
