Have played 424 matches for India: Sourav Ganguly responds to accusation of him influencing selection meetings

There is no doubting that the last year has been some of the hardest in the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) as Indian cricket has found itself in some problem or the other. Be it the postponement of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Virat Kohli captaincy saga, or the struggles in conducting the Ranji Trophy, BCCI has had a lot of issues to deal with.

With ex-Indian skipper Kohli publically denying Sourav Ganguly’s version of events about the change in T20I captaincy, the BCCI president had to face a lot of criticism over how the entire situation was handled especially his removal as the ODI skipper.

In recent times, Ganguly has been accused of attending and influencing selection meetings despite the BCCI constitution clearly stating that the board president should not be a part of them. Some old images which reappeared online seemed to show Ganguly being a part of team selections.

However, Ganguly has rejected those claims and denied any wrongdoings at all. The ex-Indian captain claimed he is doing what needs to be done in his role as the BCCI president. In an interview with news agency PTI, Ganguly said, “I don’t think I need to answer anybody anything (on this) and dignify any of these baseless accusations. I am the president of BCCI and I do the job of what the president of BCCI should be doing.”

“Also just to let you know, I see a picture doing the rounds (of social media) showing me sitting in a selection committee meeting. I want to make it clear, that picture (where Ganguly can be seen sitting with secretary Jay Shah, skipper Virat Kohli and joint secretary Jayesh George) wasn’t from a selection committee meeting.

“Jayesh George isn’t a part of selection committee meetings. (I have played) 424 international matches for India. Not a bad idea at times to remind people about it, isn’t it? (laughs),” added Ganguly.

Ganguly also stated that he has a fantastic relationship with Secretary Jay Shah and other office bearers of the BCCI. “I share a fantastic relationship with Jay. He is a very dear friend and a trusted colleague. Me, Jay, Arun (Dhumal) and Jayesh (George), we have all been working together to get the board going in these difficult times especially with COVID-19 in these two years. To make sure that cricket happens. I would say it has been a fantastic two years. We have all done it as a team,” stated the BCCI president.
