Germany’s Olympic football team left the pitch after defender Jordan Torunarigha was allegedly racially abused during his side’s warm-up match against Honduras on Saturday. Gearing up for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics 2020, the German national side squared off against minnows Honduras in a warm-up game. Torunarigha, who plays for Bundesliga club Hertha Berlin was subjected to racial abuse during the warm-up match against Honduras.

As per the tweet shared by Germany’s official social media handle, Torunarigha was racially abused in the warm-up match that took place behind closed doors. The match contested between Germany and Honduras was heading to a 1-1 draw when the European giants opted to walk off from the warm-up match. With five minutes remaining in the friendly match, players representing the playing XI of Die Mannschaft left the pitch due to alleged racial abuse.

“The game has ended 5 minutes early with the score at 1-1. The German players left the pitch after Jordan Torunarigha was racially abused,” the German football association (DFB) said in a tweet. The warm-up match was played in Wakayama, Japan. According to a report filed by Goal.com, the 23-year-old German defender was racially insulted by a Honduran player.

“When one of our players is racially abused, playing on is not an option,” said Stefan Kuntz, who is the head coach of the German national team at the Tokyo Olympics. Germany will kickstart its Tokyo Olympics 2020 campaign against defending champions Brazil on July 22.

Earlier, the Hertha Berlin defender became a subject of racist abuse when he was insulted by Schalke fans during a DFB-Pokal match in February. In the aftermath of the unfortunate incident, Schalke were fined €50,000 by the DFB. Recently, England players Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, and Bukayo Saka were racially abused after the Three Lions lost the UEFA Euro 2020 final to Italy on penalties on Wembley.
