Former Pakistan PM Imran Khan Nominated For Nobel Peace Prize: Check Out The Laureates Who Won While In Jail

The ruling party in Pakistan may not welcome the news, but Former jailed Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party, Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) leaders and supporters would celebrate after Imran Khan has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for the second time. 

He has been nominated for his work for peace and democracy in Pakistan. 

Advocacy Group Partiet Sentrum wrote on X, “We are pleased to announce on behalf of Partiet Sentrum that in alliance with somebody with the right to nominate, have nominated Mr. Imran Khan the former Prime Minister of Pakistan to the Nobel Peace Prize for his work with human rights and democracy in Pakistan.”

Imran Khan Nominated Twice for Nobel Peace Prize

Apart from this year, Imran Khan was nominated for the award in 2019 for his efforts to de-escalate tension with India. His decision to free Indian Air Force pilot Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman was observed as his effort to reduce animosity between India and Pakistan. 

Here we are going to discuss a few Noble Laureates who won the prestigious award in jail-  

Carl Von Ossietzky

German Journalist Carl Von Ossietzky won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1935 when he was in jail. He did not go to receive the award in Oslo. Carl Von Ossietzky was a critic of Adolf Hitler’s regime. Unhappy Hitler banned all Germans from accepting the Nobel award. 

Aung San Suu Kyi

Myanmar’s leader Aung San Suu Kyi won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991 when she was under house arrest. Aung San Suu Kyi’s husband and two sons received the award on her behalf. She did not go to Oslo because of apprehension that she would not be allowed to return to the country. 

Liu Xiaobo

Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2010. He served 11 years in jail. He was awarded for his efforts for fundamental rights in China. 

Ales Bialiatski

Belarusian pro-democracy activist Ales Bialiatski was jailed in 2021. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2022 where he shared it with Russia’s Memorial group and Ukraine’s Center for Civil Liberties. He was awarded for his work to document rights abuse.

Narges Mohammadi 

Narges Mohammadi is an Iranian human rights activist who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023. She is the vice president of the Defenders of Human Rights Center (DHRC). She won the Nobel Peace Prize while behind bars in October 2023. Narges Mohammadi was raising her voice against hijab and freedom for all in Iran.
