‘File FIRs, suspend SHOs’, says Election Commission as COVID norms flouted by supporters of political parties

The Election Commission of India has asked respective state Chief Secretaries to file an FIR against COVID-19 norms violators where polling is underway.

The ECI has already taken serious note of the action where people have been flouting COVID-19 norms and has been found celebrating the anticipated victory of the parties in various states like Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh among others.

The ECI has also directed to suspend the SHO of the concerned PS and has advised taking action against such incidence as they can act as a super-spreader event.

has banned any victory procession from political parties during or after the declaration of results, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, disturbing visuals from Tamil Nadu show DMK supporters celebrating outside party headquarters in Chennai as official trends show the party leading on 118 seats so far. 

The Chennai Police has filed an FIR against DMK cadres who were seen bursting crackers and celebrating victory outside the party headquarters. 

In West Bengal too, the Election Commission had earlier denied permission for the roadshow, cycle/bike/vehicle rallies in the wake of the pandemic.

TMC supporters began celebrating in Asansol after trends show the party leading on 208 seats so far. The party supporters can be seen violating COVID-19 norms as the country battles an unrelenting second wave of COVID-19. TMC supporters have also been flouting COVID SOPs in Kalighat, Kolkata as leads show TMC on the verge of victory.

As counting for UP Panchayat is underway, counting agents, supporters can be seen rushing to counting centres in Hathras. People can be seen violating the norms here as well by gathering in large numbers.

COVID cases in India

The coronavirus cases have wreaked havoc in the entire country as India saw 3.92 lakh fresh cases, as per the Union Ministry Health bulletin.

At least 3,782 people succumbed to the deadly contagious virus. The rise in cases has overwhelmed the medical infrastructure in the country as many hospitals have raised SOS regarding oxygen supply and hospital bed shortage. Such incidents in these testing times can further lead to a spike in cases in the country.
