Dialogue of the day from The Fault in Our Stars, ‘Some infinities are bigger than other infinities…’

Some of the most quietly devastating lines don’t come wrapped in obvious tragedy. They come disguised as a small, almost academic observation that turns out to mean something enormous once you realize who’s saying it and why. That’s exactly the case here. Hazel isn’t just explaining a concept about numbers. She’s working through the one question hanging over her entire story, whether a life cut short can still be considered whole.

“Some infinities are bigger than other infinities.” – Hazel Grace, The Fault in Our Stars

What’s actually being said here?

The line makes a deeply personal leap from a real mathematical idea – that between any pair of numbers there are infinite smaller numbers, which makes some infinite sets bigger than others – and turns it into a human story. Hazel is living with a terminal illness, fully aware that her life will likely be far shorter than most. The easy, expected reaction to that reality would be to see her time as lesser, incomplete, a smaller version of a full life. This line refuses that framing entirely.

Instead, Hazel says a shorter time frame isn’t necessarily a smaller infinity. It can still be full, dense, meaningful, containing everything that matters even if it doesn’t stretch across as many years as someone else’s. The length of a life and the depth of a life, in her framing, aren’t the same measurement at all. You can have fewer days and still have an infinity that holds as much, or more, than a much longer one.

That idea matters enormously in the context of her story, because so much of what she’s grappling with isn’t really fear of death itself, it’s fear of being forgettable, of leaving behind less because she had less time to leave anything at all. This line is her quiet argument against that fear. It’s not about denying the reality of her limited time. It’s about refusing to let that limited time be treated as automatically less significant simply because it’s shorter.

There’s something quietly radical in applying a concept from pure mathematics to something as personal and emotional as mortality. It takes the fear out of the abstract and makes it almost logical, almost provable, that a smaller number of days doesn’t mean a smaller life. Infinity doesn’t need a fixed length to be infinite. And by that same logic, a life doesn’t need a fixed number of years to be considered whole.

Maybe that’s why this line has resonated so widely, well beyond readers or viewers facing anything like Hazel’s circumstances. Most people, at some point, worry about whether they’re doing enough, living fully enough, in the time they have. This line offers a quiet reassurance, that meaning was never really about quantity in the first place.

About The Fault in Our Stars

Released in 2014 and directed by Josh Boone, based on John Green’s novel of the same name, The Fault in Our Stars follows Hazel Grace Lancaster, a teenager living with terminal cancer, as she falls in love with Augustus Waters, a fellow patient who helps her see her own story differently. Starring Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort, the film became known for handling illness and mortality with unusual honesty and warmth rather than sentimentality, and this line remains one of its most quoted precisely because it reframes loss not as an ending, but as its own kind of completeness.
