The centre  issued an advisory for social media channels and OTT platforms on adherence to Indian Laws and the Code of Ethics prescribed under the Information Technology Rules, 2021, amid the India’s Got Latent contoversy.

After the Supreme Court called for better control of inappropriate content on YouTube, the government has now told OTT platforms to follow the ethics code closely, following the controversy over a vulgar joke on the recently shut “India’s Got Latent” show.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting issued a notice to online content creators and self-regulatory bodies of OTT platforms, asking them to make sure they follow India’s laws and the Code of Ethics set in the Information Technology Rules, 2021, as shared by Senior I&B Ministry Advisor, Kanchan Gupta on X.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, in its notification, said it had received complaints about the “alleged spread of obscene, pornographic and vulgar content published by certain publishers of online curated content (OTT platforms) and Social Media.”

“In this regard it is stated that Part-III of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media, Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, inter alia, provide for a Code of Ethics for OTT platforms, and a three-level institutional mechanism for redressal of grievances relating to violation of the Code of Ethics,” the notification read.

Supreme Court On Ranveer Allahbadia:

The Supreme Court recently addressed the case involving Ranveer Allahabadia, a popular YouTuber and social media influencer. The court looked into his actions after some of his content was criticized for being inappropriate. The Supreme Court strongly criticized Ranveer Allahbadia’s comments, labeling him as “vulgar” and shameful to society.

Allahbadia was asked to submit his passport to the police and he cannot leave the country without consent of the court.

About the controversy:

This drama started after Ranveer Allahbadia, who was one of the judges in the episode, asked a contestent, “Would you rather watch your parents have s#x for the rest of your life, or would you join in once and stop it forever?”

Apoorva Mukhija and Samay Raina were seen laughing at this vulgar joke and they were also seen using abusive language throughout the episode. After this the netizens started to slam the creators for promoting vulgarity.
