Ben McDermott’s six leaves a young fan bleeding during Scorchers vs Hurricanes BBL game

A fabulous strike into the crowd by Hobart Hurricanes batsman Ben McDermott resulted in a fan bleeding after being hit by the ball. The incident happened during the 7th over of Hurricanes’ innings against the Perth Scorchers in the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL) 2021-22 when McDermott smashed a full toss bowled by pacer Andrew Tye onto the leg-side. A fan who made an attempt to catch the ball got hit on his forehead after missing it completely and started bleeding, not realising the same.

The young fan was still in the agony of missing the catch lying down and when he got up the blood fell on his thigh and then he realised with amusement that he was bleeding. The commentators were still talking about the dropped catch as the fan was readily waiting for it but it zoomed past him and they suddenly realised that blood was trickling down his face and soon people came to his help.

“Oh no. He’s got a bit of blood. We need some medic. He didn’t even realise,” the commentators said on air on Channel 7.

McDermott played a lovely little hand of 41 runs off just 29 balls but it wasn’t enough as scoreboard pressure mounted on the Hurricanes batsmen and they kept losing wickets in clumps eventually folding for just 129 runs, losing their second game of the competition by 53 runs.

Earlier, star all-rounder, Mitchell Marsh brought up his maiden BBL century off just 60 balls to lift Scorchers’ total to 182 after they were struggling at 74/4 in the 10th over. Marsh, who was the ‘Player of the Match’ in the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup has been in tremendous form since moving to No 3 in the batting order in the shortest format and has reaped results of the same. Scorcher are the only unbeaten team in the competition winning all the three games they have played till now.
