BCB Shake-Up! 11 Directors Axed Amid Governance Overhaul

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced the removal of 11 directors from its board due to their failure to attend three or more consecutive meetings, as stipulated by the board’s constitution. Notable names include former president Nazmul Hassan and BPL chairman Sheikh Sohel.

The directors removed are Manzur Kader, AJM Nasir Uddin, Anwarul Islam, Shafiul Alam Chowdhury, Ismail Haider Mallick, Tanvir Ahmed, Obeid Nizam, Gazi Golam Murtaza, and Nazib Ahmed. Additionally, the BCB accepted the resignations of three other directors: Naimur Rahman, Khaled Mahmud, and Enayet Hossain Siraj.

These changes come after the Awami League government was ousted on August 5 amid a violent student uprising. Many of the removed directors have direct or indirect ties to the party. Nazmul Hassan previously served as the sports minister, Shafiul Alam was an Awami League MP, and AJM Nasir Uddin was a former mayor of Chattogram during the party’s 15-year rule. Sheikh Sohel and Nazib Ahmed are relatives of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, while Ismail Haider Mallick was a close associate of Nazmul Hassan.

Before these changes, the BCB had 25 directors. With the departure of 14, including one who passed away before August, only 10 directors remain.

In a move to modernize its governance, the BCB has established a constitution amendment committee led by director Nazmul Abedeen. This committee will evaluate the current BCB constitution, identify areas for improvement, and propose amendments to align with the board’s strategic goals and evolving needs.
Following the appointment of an interim government on August 8, the BCB directors elected former Bangladesh captain Faruque Ahmed as president.

Nazmul Abedeen, a renowned coach, also stepped in as a director, filling the vacancies left by Jalal Yunus, who resigned, and Ahmed Sajjadul Alam, who was removed.
