Moviegoers will have to wait longer for the return to Gotham City, as Matt Reeves’ much-anticipated sequel to The Batman 2 has been delayed. Originally scheduled for an October 2, 2026 release, the superhero sequel will now debut on October 1, 2027, in IMAX, Warner Bros. confirmed

New Slot For Cruise And Iñárritu Film

The shift in The Batman 2‘s release opens up a spot for the highly anticipated film from Alejandro G. Iñárritu and Tom Cruise. The untitled project will now hit theaters on October 2, 2026, in the slot previously occupied by The Batman 2. The film, set to be part of the awards season race, follows the journey of “the most powerful man in the world” as he tries to prove his role as humanity’s savior before a disaster destroys everything. The all-star cast includes Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde, and Riz Ahmed.

Adjustments To Other Warner Bros. Releases

Warner Bros. also made adjustments to its upcoming release slate. Mickey 17, the sci-fi film directed by Bong Joon Ho and starring Robert Pattinson, will now open on March 7, 2025. Meanwhile, Sinners, directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B. Jordan, will be pushed back to April 18, 2025. The change in dates for Mickey 17 allows for a longer IMAX run, while Sinners was delayed due to post-production delays.

“Mickey 17” And “Sinners” Details

“Mickey 17” follows Robert Pattinson’s character, a man whose job is to die for a living. The film, initially slated for a 2024 release, has an ensemble cast that includes Mark Ruffalo, Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, and Toni Collette.
Meanwhile, “Sinners” is a horror film about twin brothers (played by Michael B. Jordan) who return home to face an even greater evil. The film features an ensemble cast including Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O’Connell, and Delroy Lindo.

The Batman, which debuted in 2022, was a commercial success, grossing over $770 million worldwide. The film, praised for its atmospheric take on the iconic superhero, also led to the HBO spinoff series The Penguin. In a recent interview, director Matt Reeves revealed that he is finalizing the script for the sequel, with plans to begin shooting next year.
