The formation of the 8th Central Pay Commission is a subject of widespread speculation among the central government employees across the country. The Union Finance Ministry has recently stated in the Rajya Sabha that it has no intention to set up a new Pay Commission as of now. The clarification cause a widespread disappointment in the minds of over 1 crore central government employees and pensioners.

Initially, speculators thought the government would announce the formation of the new Pay Commission in the February 2025 budget. However, the government’s recent clarification that put the end on the anticipations, at least for now. The Confederation of Central Government Employees recently urged the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a letter, to establish a new Pay Commission as soon as possible.

Additionally, media reports suggest that the All India State Government Employees Federation plans to hold a nationwide protest on New Year’s Day to demand the formation of a new Pay Commission. Subhash Lamba, the National President of the Federation, announced that the Federation will hold its National Executive meeting in Kanpur on 28 and 29 December, reported ‘Dainik Tribune’. “A concrete plan of agitation will be made in it,” ‘Dainik Tribune’ quoted Lamba.

8th Pay Commission: Will Central Govt Employees Get 186% Pay Hike?

Recent statement by Shiv Gopal Mishra, secretary of the staff side of the National Council of Joint Consultative Machinery (NC-JCM), sparked the debate over the 186% pay hike for the central government employees. Mishra said that the next Pay Commission may suggest a fitment factor of “at least 2.86”.

If the government greenlights this fitment factor, the minimum basic pay for the central government employees could rise from Rs 18,000 to Rs 51,480. This is a significant 186% salary hike. Similarly, at this fitment factor, the pensions of the central government pensioners could rise from Rs 9,000 to Rs 25,740.
