Presenting his take on the altercation between Ravichandran Ashwin and Eoin Morgan in the second leg of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021, legendary opener Virender Sehwag called out the England white-ball captain for getting involved in a heated on-field spat with the veteran Indian spinner. Ashwin’s on-field altercation with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) skipper Morgan in match No.41 of the IPL 2021 has sparked a neverending debate about the ‘Spirit of Game’.
While Delhi Capitals (DC) skipper Rishabh Pant opted to downplay the verbal spat between the two players, legendary spinner Shane Warne has slammed Ashwin over his ‘disgraceful’ act on the field. Sehwag, who is known for his witty one-liners and sly digs, schooled Morgan for engaging in a war of words with Ashwin. Taking to Twitter, Sehwag took a dig at Morgan and also recalled how England were rewarded with four overthrows in the ICC World Cup 2019 final against New Zealand.
The former Indian skipper also shared an excerpt from Dinesh Karthik’s recent press conference after KKR defeated DC in the IPL 2021. “On July 14th , 2019 when it ricocheted of Ben Stokes’ bat in the final over, Mr. Morgan sat on a dharna outside Lord’s and refused to hold the World Cup trophy and New Zealand won. Haina? Bade aaye, ‘Doesn’t appreciate’ waale,” Sehwag tweeted.
Ashwin and Morgan had a heated exchange after the DC star had tried stealing an extra run after Rahul Tripathi’s throw ricocheted off DC captain Pant in the death overs. KKR wicket-keeper and former skipper Karthik had acted as a “peace-maker” in the aftermath of the on-field altercation between Ashwin and Morgan. After the match, Karthik had opened up about the extra-run controversy.
“I know that Rahul Tripathi threw the ball and it hit Rishabh Pant and then it ricocheted of that and Ashwin started to run. I do not think Morgan appreciates that, he is someone when the ball hits the batter, he expects them not to run because of the spirit of cricket,” Karthik had said in the press conference.
