Violent protests by factory workers in Noida have pushed the Uttar Pradesh government to take a major decision on wages. The government led by Yogi Adityanath has now approved an increase in minimum wages across all categories, aiming to calm tensions and address workers’ demands.
Wage Hike Announced Across Regions
Under the revised structure, workers in the Noida-Ghaziabad region will see a clear increase in their monthly earnings. Unskilled workers will now get Rs 13,690, while semi-skilled workers will receive Rs 15,059. Skilled workers’ wages have been raised to Rs 16,868 per month.
In other municipal corporation areas of the state, unskilled workers will get Rs 13,006, semi-skilled workers Rs 14,306, and skilled workers Rs 16,025. Meanwhile, in the remaining districts, the wages have been fixed at Rs 12,356 for unskilled workers, Rs 13,591 for semi-skilled workers, and Rs 15,224 for skilled workers.
The decision comes after workers demanded higher wages similar to Haryana’s recent revisions, along with better working hours, overtime pay, and improved safety conditions.
UP govt dismisses social media claims
Notably, while announcing the wage revision, the government debunked social media rumours. Officials clarified that reports of minimum wages being set at Rs 20,000 per month are entirely baseless and misleading.
Violent Protests
The wage revision follows violent protests in Noida’s industrial areas, including Phase-2 and Sector 60. Demonstrators torched vehicles, including police SUVs, and vandalised property. Several factories in sectors such as 58, 59, 60, and 64 were forced to shut down amid the unrest.
In Sector 63, protesters reportedly set multiple cars on fire at a service centre and damaged property, including a guard cabin. Stone-pelting using bricks and rods was also reported from several locations like Sectors 57, 63, and 65.
The protests began in the morning and quickly escalated, severely affecting traffic. Many commuters were left stranded on routes towards Delhi, with long queues of vehicles stretching for kilometres at the Delhi-Noida border.
