Xi Jinping warns Donald Trump, says US, China could ‘come into conflict’ if Taiwan issue…

Tensions over Taiwan took centre stage as Xi Jinping met Donald Trump during a high-stakes summit in Beijing, with both leaders balancing sharp warnings and warm praise in a closely watched meeting.

Could the Taiwan issue trigger a major conflict?

Speaking at the Great Hall of the People, Xi Jinping warned that the Taiwan issue remains the most sensitive topic in US-China relations. He said that if the matter is not handled carefully, it could push ties between Washington and Beijing into a “very dangerous situation”.

According to Chinese state media, Xi stressed that proper handling of the issue could help maintain stability. However, failure to do so could lead to clashes or even open conflict between the two global powers. His remarks underline growing concerns about rising tensions in the region.

Why is Taiwan so important to China and the US?

China considers Taiwan a part of its territory, even though the island functions as a self-governing democracy with its own political system. Over the past few years, Beijing has increased military drills around Taiwan and has not ruled out the possibility of using force to take control.

Is trade cooperation overshadowing rising tensions?

Despite the serious warning on Taiwan, the meeting also saw a positive tone on economic ties. Donald Trump praised Xi Jinping, calling him a “great leader” and expressing optimism about future cooperation between the two countries.

Trump said he expected trade relations to become more balanced and reciprocal. He also highlighted the presence of top American business leaders at the summit, signalling strong interest in expanding economic engagement with China.
