WTC final: Indian skipper Virat Kohli on verge of surpassing Ricky Ponting to create world record

Indian skipper Virat Kohli is on the verge of creating a new world record as he gears up to lead India in the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) against New Zealand. All eyes will be on Kohli in the summit clash as the Indian skipper is expected to lead from the front and inspire India to their first major ICC trophy since 2013. Kohli will be looking to bring an end to his century drought in the WTC final.

Kohli last scored a Test hundred in India’s first-ever day-night Test against Bangladesh in 2019. He has since been searching for his 28th ton in the longest format of the game. If the Indian captain manages to score a century in the final against New Zealand, he will surpass Ricky Ponting to create a new world record.

Kohli is currently just one century short of breaking former Australia captain Ponting’s record of most international hundreds as captain. Presently, both Kohli and Ponting are tied at 41 international hundreds apiece as captains. A ton against the Kiwis will add another feather to Kohli’s illustrious cap.

Kohli was the highest run-getter for India with a staggering 593 runs in five matches and will be looking to repeat his heroics once again this year. Kohli was seen in action during Team India’s recently concluded intra-squad practice match which was played last week.

Kohli was seen practicing against pacer and bounce in team India’s latest training session on Monday. In a video shared by the BCCI, the Indian skipper was seen ducking away from a bouncer. He is sweating it out ahead of the final and will be looking to help India lift the trophy in Southampton next week.

The final will get underway from Friday (June 18). A reserve day has been kept for the summit clash in case of rain while a draw will lead to both teams sharing the trophy. The winner of the final will take home USD 1.6 million.
