In a recent report by the Centre, the Ministry of Statistics shows that women in India are earning more and, surprisingly, finding better job opportunities across different sectors. These sectors include both private and public sectors. Various sectors have witnessed an increasing female workforce over the past six years in different types of employment.

Rise In Working Women Population In Rural Area:

The report by the Ministry highlights a steep increase in the participation of women in the workforce from rural areas. The reason behind this is that more women are getting involved in economic activities in villages. The Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) confirms that the Indian job market has improved significantly over the past six years.

The Data From The Survey Shows Important Improvements In The Labour Market:

  • Worker Population Ratio (WPR): This ratio, which shows the percentage of people with jobs in the total population, increased from 46.8% in 2017-18 to 58.2% in 2023-24.
  • Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR): The percentage of people actively looking for work grew from 49.8% to 60.1% during the same period.
  • Unemployment Rate (UR): Unemployment dropped sharply from 6.0% to 2%, reflecting better job availability and economic stability.

Improvement In Female Labour Force Participation

Women these days are progressive and are significantly participating across the nation. From the houshold to finacial assistance women are giving their part. . The Female Labour Force Participation Rate (FLFPR) in rural areas jumped by 23% points, from 24.6% in 2017-18 to 47.6% in 2023-24. This signals that more women are contributing to rural production.

  • Women’s Worker Population Ratio (WPR): This doubled from 22% in 2017-18 to 40.3% in 2023-24.
  • Women’s Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR): This increased from 23.3% to 41.7%.
  • Unemployment Rate for Women: This dropped from 5.6% to 3.2%, reflecting more job opportunities for women.

The survey also shows an increase in the number of educated women in the workforce:

  • Post-Graduate Women: Around 39.6% of women with post-graduate degrees were working in 2023-24, up from 34.5% in 2017-18.
  • Higher Secondary Women: The number of women with a higher secondary education working in the workforce increased from 11.4% in 2017-18 to 23.9% in 2023-24.
  • Primary Education Women: For women with primary education, the percentage working jumped from 24.9% to 50.2% over the last six years.
