Without Scoring Runs, Taking Wickets, Or Catches: Still Awarded Man Of The Match

In 2001, an extraordinary event occurred in cricket history when a player was awarded Man of the Match without taking a single wicket or scoring any runs. This unusual occurrence took place during the Coca Cola Cup in Harare, involving Zimbabwe, India, and the West Indies.

At the time, Zimbabwe was considered a strong team. The tournament saw India, under Sourav Ganguly’s leadership, recovering from a match-fixing scandal, and the West Indies team boasted stars like Chris Gayle, Darren Ganga, Marlon Samuels, Carl Hooper, and Shivnarine Chanderpaul. Yet, the spotlight fell on a senior player nearing the end of his career.

Match Details

West Indies batted first, scoring a solid 266 for 5, with Gayle, Ganga, and Chanderpaul making fifties. Darren Ganga top-scored with 66. In response, Zimbabwe had a steady start but kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Thanks to Alistair Campbell’s 68, Zimbabwe came close to the target. However, despite the West Indies bowlers conceding runs, they managed to prevent any significant partnerships. Among them was a bowler who did not take any wickets but still turned the game.

Cameron Cuffy: Man of the Match

Cameron Cuffy, who debuted in 1994 against India in Faridabad, became the Man of the Match in this game. Standing 6 feet 7 inches tall, Cuffy’s bowling spell was so effective that it made scoring even single runs difficult for Zimbabwe’s batsmen. In his 10 overs, he conceded just 20 runs, including 2 maiden overs, without taking a wicket. This tight bowling performance changed the match’s course, leading Zimbabwe to score only 239 and lose by 27 runs.

Who is Cameron Cuffy?

Cuffy’s career was not very long. After his debut in 1994, he played only 41 ODIs and 15 Test matches, taking 41 and 43 wickets, respectively. He was once considered the successor to the dangerous Patrick Patterson. However, due to the presence of legends like Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh, Cuffy spent much of his career waiting on the bench.
