With 1 million followers, RBI most popular central bank on Twitter

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) now has 1 million followers on Twitter making it more popular than any other central bank on the planet. RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das on Sunday took to the micro-blogging platform to highlight the feat from his personal Twitter account.

“RBI Twitter account reaches one million followers today. A new milestone. Congratulations to all my colleagues in RBI,” Das tweeted from his account earlier today.

The 85-year-old monetary policy and regulator and its Governor Das have separate Twitter accounts.

Twitter has emerged as the goto destination for authorities, world leaders and even central banks to interact with citizens and disseminate key policy decisions and announcements over the years.

The banking regulator has added over 250,00 followers since April 30 when it reached the milestone of 750,000 on Twitter.

Earlier reports attributed the meteoric rise in the popularity of RBI on the social media platforms to various online campaigns undertaken by it. For example, on April 20 alone, RBI’s handle ‘@RBI’ added 131,000 new followers. Since March 2019, the count of followers has more than doubled from just about 3,42,000 to over 7,50,000 to data, the official said.

The banking regulator has two Twitter accounts: @RBI and @RBIsays. The former is used to broadcast key policy decisions while the later is a public awareness initiative which regularly publishes crucial financial information and tips for the general public.

Other central banks, however, lag far behind in terms of following on the social media platform of choice for world’s talking heads.

Closely behind RBI is Indonesia’s central bank with 757,500 followers while Mexico’s Banco de Mexico is third with 774,200 followers on its handle.

The RBI created its Twitter account in January 2012.
