Will stay connected with cricket, have offers from political parties: Harbhajan Singh on post-retirement plans

After bringing a long and glorious 23-year-old career at the highest level to an end on Friday, Harbhajan Singh is set to start a new post-retirement innings in his career following the big announcement.  Answering questions on his future plans at a media interaction at Jalandhar, the former Indian cricket asserted that while he is yet to make a final decision, he will stay connected with cricket in some capacity.

“Future plan is something I have not decided, I will stay connected with cricket… it is because of cricket people know me,” said Harbhajan. Amid speculation about a stint in politics, Harbhajan confessed that he offers from various political parties but will only venture into the field if he feels he is completely prepared to do it.

The legendary off-spinner said, “As far as my political career… when it happens, I will let everyone know. To be honest, I have not thought about it. I have offers from different parties to join… but I will have to sit and think very wisely. It won’t be a small decision because it is a demanding job. I do not want to do it half-heartedly. The day I think I am prepared to do it, I will go for it.”

The four-time Indian Premier League (IPL) winner also played down the significance of his recent meeting with cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sindhu and stated that it had nothing to do with him joining politics. “It was a casual meeting. Polls are near so I understood why people speculate… but there is nothing. If I enter politics, I will let everyone know,” said Harbhajan.

In recent weeks, various media reports have also linked Harbhajan with a coaching role in an IPL franchise. His last playing assignment was in the 2021 season of the cash-rich league where he represented the Kolkata Knight Riders and helped them reach the final.
