Will India Slash Tariffs ‘Way Down’? Here’s What US President Donald Trump Claimed

United States tariffs have become a hot topic of discussion recently. In his latest announcement, United States President claimed that India will cut tariffs ‘way down.’ Speaking from the Oval office, Trump reiterated that India imposes “massive tariffs” on the US. He said that it is next to impossible to sell anything to India because of the “high tariffs.” However, the country (India) has intended to reduce those rates, Donald Trump stated.

Trump Attacks India’s Tariff Regime

He added that India has agreed to cut down its tariffs as “somebody is finally exposing them for what they have done.” Trump said, “India charges us massive tariffs. Massive. You can’t even sell anything in India…They have agreed, by the way; they want to cut their tariffs way down now because somebody is finally exposing them for what they have done.”

In a televised address, Trump emphasised that his administration will be putting the tariffs in effect soon. Notably, US is preparing to introduce reciprocal tariffs on countries that impose high levies on American goods. This is set to take place from April 2.

Trump declared that the US will no longer tolerate being taken advantage of by other nations, particularly those with high-tariff regimes, including India. He asserted that US “has been taken advantage of by everyone.” He further added that this practice will “stop now.”

He also criticised several countries, including Canada and the European Union, for imposing high tariffs on American goods. “Canada has been ripping us off for years on tariffs for lumber and for dairy products. Two hundred and fifty percent. Nobody ever talks about that. Two hundred and fifty percent tariff, which is taking advantage of our farmers. So that’s not going to happen anymore. We’re going to be, they’ll be met with the exact same tariff unless they drop it,” Trump said.
