‘Will consider becoming Congress chief again’: Rahul Gandhi after CWC meeting

After everyone present at the Congress Working Committee meeting in Delhi today agreed unanimously that Rahul Gandhi should become the party chief, the Wayanad MP said: “he will consider”.

He also said that he needs clarity at the level of ideology from the party leaders.

Meanwhile, some leaders said that till the polls, he should be made the working president.

After the meeting concluded, Congress leader Ambika Soni told the press that whether Rahul will become the party president or not is up to him.

Sonia Gandhi was made interim president by CWC after Rahul Gandhi stepped down as the president of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) accepting the responsibility of humiliating poll debacle in the 2019 general elections.

In an attempt to silence critics ahead of the 2022 Assembly polls, interim president of Congress Sonia Gandhi said she is the “full-time and hands-on” party chief.

In a message to the G-23 leaders, she also said there is no need for others to speak to her through the media.

Her remarks came days after Kapil Sibal demanded an immediate meeting of the CWC. The Rajya Sabha MP also wondered who in the party was taking decisions in the absence of a full-time president.

Meanwhile, a senior G-23 member told TOI that Sonia Gandhi and her children want to retain full control over Congress.

“Sonia Gandhi has the responsibility while her kids are wielding the authority and they are messing it up,” he said.

The Congress Working Committee has also decided that the elections to the post of Congress president will be held in September next year.

During a nearly five-hour-long meeting various leaders, including chief ministers Ashok Gehlot of Rajasthan, Bhupesh Baghel of Chhattisgarh and Charanjit Singh Channi of Punjab urged Rahul Gandhi to take over as the president.

The Wayanad MP thanked all the leaders for reposing faith in him and said he would apply his mind to their request.
