As per the Constitution, the Vice-President officially counts the electoral college votes when houses of Congress gather for it. However, not all vice presidents have opted for this, and Kamala Harris has expressed to carry out this process, as per media reports.

This is a unique situation when she will be announcing her own defeat. Donald Trump defeated Kamala Harris in the U.S. presidential elections conducted in 2024.

The post of Vice-President comes with different roles and responsibilities. But this time a Vice-President will be seen in tough situation as she will preside over joint session of Congress to tally their opponent’s presidential electors. This will be happening after the two months of her lost in US election.

This will be an awkward and different kind of situation when Kamala Harris will be announcing this in front of the members of the two houses. Earlier, Donald Trump had refused to concede defeat. He fought to return to power. He did a comeback after the voters ousted him from office.

In the US Presidential election that took place in 2024, Republican Party candidate Donald Trump got 312 electoral votes, and Democratic Party candidate Kamala Harris got 226 votes.

Who Else, Apart From Harris, Has Faced This Before?

This is not the first time that the candidate who lost presided over the joint session of Congress to tally their opponent’s presidential electors. Before this AI Gore faced this in 2001 and Richard Nixon in 1961.
