Aman identified as Cole Tomas Allen has been formally charged with attempting to assassinate US President Donald Trump, a day after gunfire erupted at a major political gathering in Washington. If convicted, the 31-year-old from Torrance, California, could face life imprisonment.

Court appearance and serious charges

Allen was produced before a federal court in Washington on Monday (local time), following the shooting incident that took place during a high-profile dinner attended by top US leaders, journalists and officials. Among those present were President Trump and Vice President JD Vance.

During the hearing, prosecutor Jocelyn Ballantine outlined the seriousness of the case, stating that Allen had brought multiple weapons with him. ‘He attempted to assassinate the president of the United States, Donald J. Trump,’ she said. Authorities confirmed that the accused also faces charges related to transporting firearms across state lines and using a weapon during a violent crime.

How the incident unfolded

According to investigators, the accused allegedly opened fire while attempting to enter the ballroom at the Washington Hilton, where the event was underway. The gathering was part of the annual White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner.

Surveillance footage reportedly showed Allen dressed in black, carrying a bag containing weapons. He is believed to have used a stairwell to bypass security checks before heading towards the main venue. However, Secret Service personnel intervened in time and subdued him.

Officials said between five to eight shots were fired during the incident. One officer was injured but survived due to a bulletproof vest. President Trump was immediately escorted out and was not harmed.

Weapons recovered from the accused

During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Allen had carried a 12-gauge pump-action shotgun along with three knives. These details have further strengthened the case against him, highlighting the level of preparation involved.

Allen’s academic background paints a contrasting picture. As per available information, he studied mechanical engineering at the California Institute of Technology and later completed a master’s degree in computer science from California State University, Dominguez Hills in 2025.

His former professor, Bin Tang, expressed shock at the development, saying, ‘He was a very good student indeed, always sitting in the first row of my class, paying attention, and frequently emailing me with coursework questions. Soft spoken, very polite, a good fellow. I am very shocked to see the news.’

Manifesto and possible motive

Investigators also recovered a written document believed to be a manifesto. In it, Allen reportedly described himself as a ‘Friendly Federal Assassin’ and expressed criticism of certain government actions during Trump’s leadership, though no direct reference to the president was made.

Authorities said he had shared some of his writings with family members prior to the incident. According to information provided to investigators, Allen had been making extreme remarks in recent times and often spoke about doing ‘something’ to fix issues in the world. He was also known to regularly visit shooting ranges.
