When Rohit Sharma Scored 5 Centuries In A Single ODI Series 6 Years Ago

Current Indian skipper Rohit Sharma wrote his name in cricket’s history book with a record display of batting during the 2019 ODI World Cup. On July 6, 2019, he became the first-ever batter to hit five centuries in the same edition of the 50-over World Cup. The right-handed batsman completed this record on India’s final group stage match against Sri Lanka at Headingley, in Leeds. Before this match, Rohit had already scored 122*, 140, 102, and 104 against South Africa, Pakistan, England, and Bangladesh, respectively, in the previous matches of the competition. Three of those four matches had been won by the Men in Blue, with their sole loss being against future champions England.

However, Virat Kohli scored 765 runs in the 2023 ODI World Cup to be the top run-getter in one edition of the prestigious tournament, which is greater than Sachin Tendulkar’s 673 runs. Against Sri Lanka, the Mumbai batsman hit 103 from 94 balls to enable India to chase a 265-run target with seven wickets and 39 balls left. KL Rahul also made a century in the match, as Angelo Mathews’ century in the first innings did not count. While making his top-class innings, Rohit hit 14 fours and two sixes. He was awarded Player of the Match for his great innings.

With his fifth ton in the tournament, Rohit set a record that was previously held by Kumar Sangakkara for four tons in one edition of an ODI World Cup. The Sri Lankan legend had done it earlier when he had made four consecutive centuries in the 2015 edition of the ODI World Cup. Rohit’s 27th century in the format came against Sri Lanka.

Rohit completed the tournament with a brilliant score of 648 runs from nine innings at an astonishing average of 81 and a remarkable strike rate of 98.33. There was no other batsman who scored as many runs as him during the 2019 ODI World Cup. His score of 648 runs was the third-highest in a single World Cup tournament up to that point.
