What Will Happen Next as US Senate Passes Bill to End Trump’s Tariffs on Brazil

In a shocking moment, the Republican-led US Senate approved a resolution   that would invalidate President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Brazil. The move also ends the national emergency that Trump had declared in July. He had announced the emergency in response to Brazil’s legal action against its former president, Jair Bolsonaro, who is accused of trying to stage a coup. The legislation from Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine, a Democrat, passed on a 52-48 tally.

What Will Happen Next as US Senate Passes Bill?

The bill would end the national emergencies that Trump used to justify 50% tariffs on Brazil. However, it will probably not succeed because the Republican-controlled House has made new rules that can stop it from being voted on. Even if Congress passes it, Trump is almost certain to reject it with a veto.

Still, the vote demonstrated some pushback in GOP ranks against Trump’s tariffs. Five Republicans — Sens. Susan Collins of Maine, Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Rand Paul of Kentucky and Thom Tillis of North Carolina — all voted in favor of the resolution along with every Democrat.
