West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee talking opposition unity to divert attention from Birbhum violence: BJP

BJP has called West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee’s decision to convene a meeting of opposition parties against the Centre a ploy designed to divert attention from the Birbhum violence.
The death of nine people in an intra-party fight shows that lawlessness is rampant in West Bengal and Mamata Banerjee is simply seeking to deflect attention from this serious issue by levelling false allegations against central agencies, said BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra.
The TMC supremo has written to all non-BJP chief ministers and opposition parties, including the Congress urging all “progressive forces” to come together and put up a united fight against the “oppressive BJP regime”.
The West Bengal CM called for a meeting to discuss strategies to counter the saffron juggernaut and also commit to the cause of unified and principled opposition to make way for the “government that the country deserves”.
Accusing the Centre of engaging in vindictive politics, she said that the democratic fabric of the country was being attacked with the use of agencies such as the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) to ‘harass and corner political opponents”.
She also accused the BJP government of trying to deflect public ire over issues such as fuel price hikes by falsely claiming that the law and order in West Bengal has collapsed.
“People are suffering due to sharp hike in fuel prices and the BJP is harping on stray incidents to divert attention from core issues and also give West Bengal a bad name,” she said.
After BJP, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury also accused Mamata of trying to divert public attention by talking of opposition unity.
Mamata Banerjee is scared of the aftermath of Birbhum violence as people have started raising their voices, he said.
Birbhum incident has tarnished the image of the state and people across the country are condemning the West Bengal government, he added.
