Want to change system which has eroded Punjab like termites, not hankering for post: Navjot Singh Sidhu

Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu  asserted that he is not hankering for any post but working to demolish a system which could not give justice to our Guru’ and could not punish ‘big fishes’ involved in the drug racket.

He said his fight was to change this system which “eroded Punjab like termites and is being run by mafias”.

“A system which could not give justice to our Guru and could not punish big fishes involved in drug trade needs to be demolished. I categorically state that I’m not running for any post and it’s either this system will stay or Navjot Singh Sidhu,” he stated in a tweet.

Sidhu was apparently referring to the 2015 sacrilege incidents that took place in Faridkot.

The cricketer-turned-politician had been raising the issue of ‘justice to Gurus’ in the 2015 sacrilege and subsequent police firings on demonstrators protesting the incidents.

“The fight is to change this system which has eroded Punjab like termites and is being run by Mafias in connivance of mischievous politicians. This system cries for a change & reforms as the glory of Punjab has been annihilated by the nexus of a few political leaders and Mafias,” he further stated.

Two days ago, Sidhu had shared a roadmap of his ‘Punjab model’ of post-poll rule and had promised the formation of government-run corporations for regulating liquor and sand mining sectors for raising the state’s revenue if his party returns to power.

He had also said it’s the people who elect MLAs and in Punjab, they will choose their chief minister as well, not the Congress ‘high command’.

Sidhu had made the sharp retort amid speculation that the former cricketer was himself eyeing the top post if the Congress wins next month’s assembly polls.

“The people of Punjab will make the CM. Who told you that the high command will make the CM?” he had shot back at a reporter while answering a question on the party’s possible pick for the post.

The Congress has not announced a CM face for the upcoming assembly polls and Charanjit Singh Channi, appointed the CM after the ouster of Amarinder Singh, is also being seen as a strong contender if the party wins.
