Vaishno Devi yatra suspended: Heavy snowfall in J&k halts the holy shrine journey

The holy shrine journey, the Vaishno Devi Yatra, was temporarily suspended  after heavy snowfall and rain hit the several regions of Jammu & Kashmir, officials said. The weather changed rapidly, bringing the first snowfall of the season to the holy Trikuta Hills and prompting authorities to halt the pilgrimage for safety reasons.

First Snowfall of Season

The famous Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine atop the Trikuta Hills was covered in fresh snow, turning the steep paths and surrounding mountains into a serene winter landscape. The snowfall began on Thursday evening in high-altitude areas and continued into Friday, creating scenic views but also unsafe conditions for trekkers.

Images and videos shared by news agencies show the pilgrimage route and the Holy Shrine covered in a thick white layer of snow, drawing awe from observers but raising safety concerns for travellers.

Yatra halted for safety

Authorities of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board ordered the suspension of the Yatra after assessing the weather conditions. Pilgrims already at the base camp in Katra were asked to stay cautious, and no new yatris were allowed to begin the trek until the weather improves, officials said.

Heavy snow and rain also affected daily life in the region, forcing the closure of major roads and highways. Traffic on the key Jammu–Srinagar National Highway was also suspended due to snow accumulation and slippery conditions at several points.

Precautions and relief efforts

In response to the weather, schools in hilly districts of Jammu & Kashmir were closed as a precautionary measure. The local administration also set up helpline numbers and safety teams to assist residents and travellers affected by the snowfall.

Devotees await yatra to resume

Devotees who had planned to undertake the pilgrimage expressed mixed reactions. Many also shared their disappointment on social media platforms. Officials said the Yatra will resume once weather conditions improve and authorities ensure that the paths are safe for pilgrims.
