The proposal for construction of the much-awaited Ganga Expressway, which will connect easter and western parts of Uttar Pradesh, has been cleared by the UP cabinet.

The construction of the Ganga Expressway will incur Rs 36,230 crore and a provision of Rs 19,700 crore has been made for civil construction. Further, the UP cabinet said that the bidding process for Ganga Expressway will happen within 60 days.

The Uttar Pradesh government has acquired around 93% or more than 6,800 hectares of land required for Ganga Expressway, the longest e-way in northern India, UP CM Yogi Adityanath had said earlier.

The total cost of construction for the first phase of the project is pegged at Rs 35,952 crore. The funding for this project will be done by 70% debt and 30% equity combination.

The third expressway in UP will start near Bujauli village in Meerut and will terminate at Judapur Dandu village of Prayagraj. Phase I of the construction of the Expressway will be 594 Km long and it will cover Meerut, Jyotibha Phule Nagar, Hapur, Sambhal, Budaun, Shahjahanpur, Furrukhabad, Hardoi, Unnao, Rae Bareilly, Pratapgarh, and Prayagraj districts.

There will be 14 major bridges, 126 minor bridges, eight road overbridges, and 18 flyovers.  A bridge of 1-km will be constructed along the expressway over Ganga and yet another bridge of 720 metres over Ramganga will be constructed

The expressway will have six lanes and may be extended up to 8 lanes in the future. The top speed of the vehicles running on the Ganga Expressway will be limited to 120 Kmph. The project will reduce the travel time from Delhi to Prayagraj from current 10-11 hours to just 6 hours
