Over the past five years, Gujarat has witnessed a significant surge in the registration of 37,56,390 new MSMEs across the state. During the same period, 8,779 MSMEs have shut down, indicating the resilience of the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector amid global economic strain. Union Minister of State for MSMEs, Shobha Karandlaje, disclosed this information while replying to a question by Rajya Sabha MP Parimal Nathwani on Monday’s opening day of the Monsoon Session.

She made the statement in response to Nathwani’s query, in which he sought clarification on whether the Government has assessed the impact of global economic headwinds on MSMEs, and whether there is any record of their shutdown in the states of Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh.

In her written reply to the Rajya Sabha, the minister said, “As per data from Udyam Registration Portal, a total number of 8,779 MSMEs have closed in Gujarat and a total of 2,892 MSMEs have closed in Andhra Pradesh from 01.07.2020 till 15.07.2025, whereas in the same period, the number of new registration of MSMEs in Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh is 37,56,390 and 33,78,109 respectively.”

The minister also mentioned various initiatives that have been taken by the government to support the MSMEs in the country, citing data from the Udyam Registration Portal.
