TVK chief Vijay meets Tamil Nadu Gov Rajendra Arlekar; stakes claim to form govt

Amid high-stakes deliberations underway in four states and one Union Territory where the Assembly election results were just announced, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam chief Vijay met with Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on Wednesday and sought to claim to form the Government in the state. He met with the governor along with other party members.

The actor-turned-politician’s party won 108 seats in the Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026, but fell short of a majority by 10 seats to form the government in the state. The party got back support from the state Congress but with conditions.

The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee formally announced its support for TVK to form the government, with a condition attached. “Tamil Nadu Congress Committee and the Congress Legislative Party have decided to extend their full support to the TVK to form the government. Our support shall be conditional upon the TVK keeping out from this alliance any communal forces that do not believe in the Constitution of India,” the party said in a press release.

According to media reports, TVK chief Vijay’s swearing-in ceremony is likely to take place on May 7 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai.

After meeting with the TVK chief Vijay, Congress leader Praveen Chakravarthy said, “We met Mr Vijay, and gave him the letter of support. He spoke to Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi on the phone, thanked them and invited them for the swearing-in tomorrow. We are supporting the mandate given to Mr Vijay by the people of Tamil Nadu.”

Alliance with AIADMK?

The AIADMK added another layer of uncertainty to Tamil Nadu’s government formation on Wednesday, with party spokesperson Kovai Sathyan stopping short of ruling out an alliance with TVK. “The majority decision will be taken by the high command. If he has to turn the dream into reality, it has to come from Mr Vijay’s side,” he said when asked whether the AIADMK would ally with TVK.

TVK won 108 seats in the 234-member assembly, while Congress, which contested the polls as part of the DMK-led alliance, won five seats and has since announced conditional support for Vijay’s government.

Meanwhile, Vijay broke his silence late on Tuesday, thanking the people of Tamil Nadu for what he described as a “historic and transformative mandate.” Calling the verdict a “miracle” that had shaken Indian politics, he credited young voters for TVK’s remarkable debut performance, saying their enthusiasm and participation had played a decisive role in shaping the outcome.
