Trump Responds to Putin’s Shrug Over US Sanctions on Russian Oil Companies – ‘We’ll See How It Works Out in Six Months’

United States President Donald Trump  responded to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s criticism of the new sanctions targeting two large state-owned oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil. On being questioned about Putin’s statement that the sanctions imposed by the US won’t impact the Russian economy, the American President told reporters at the White House, “I am glad he feels that way. I’ll let you know about it in six months from now. Let’s see how it all works out…”

Trump’s remarks come after the Russian President called the US sanctions on two of its largest oil companies an “unfriendly move” that won’t significantly impact the country’s economy. “This is, of course, an attempt to put pressure on Russia. “But no self-respecting country and no self-respecting people ever decides anything under pressure,” Putin said.

US Calls Off Meeting With Putin

Trump on Wednesday mentioned that the planned Putin summit was called off as it would not achieve the outcome he wanted and complained that his many “good conversations” with him did not “go anywhere”.

“We canceled the meeting with President Putin – it just didn’t feel right to me,” Trump told reporters at the White House. “It didn’t feel like we were going to get to the place we have to get. So I canceled it, but we’ll do it in the future,” Trump said. Following this, Putin responded to the cancellation of an anticipated meeting with Trump, stating that “dialogue is always better than confrontation.” He said Trump most likely meant the summit had been postponed.

‘Trump Wants to See Action, Not Just Talk’ – White House

Explaining the intention of Donald Trump to see action, not just talk, to make progress towards peace, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt on Thursday said that the United States wants to ensure that a meeting between him and Vladimir Putin will be a productive use of his time. “The president and the entire administration hope that it can happen again one day. But we want to make sure that there’s a tangible positive outcome out of that meeting and that it’s a good use of the president’s time,” the White House Press Secretary said.
