This is why he was not able to leave the ball: Virat Kohli’s childhood coach explains pupil’s off-side problem

In the ongoing Test match between India and South Africa, Virat Kohli has impressed Indian cricket fans by playing with remarkable discipline and restrain in both innings.

While the Indian skipper is known for his aggressive instincts, he has displayed a different side of himself in Cape Town and many will argue it is something the team desperately needed.

Over the last few months, Kohli has come under criticism for his form with the bat as the Indian skipper has not scored a century in international cricket for more than two years.

Moreover, he was dismissed in a similar manner by edging a delivery outside the off-stump on numerous occasions raising concern among cricket fans. In fact, in the series opener between the two sides in Centurion, he lost his wicket in both innings in the same way despite looking solid on the crease.

This issue was visible in India’s tour of England last year where the England bowlers successfully made him edge deliveries in that area numerous times which bought haunted memories of the 2014 tour for many fans.

With Kohli making a dramatic change in his mindset to counter the problem, his childhood coach Rajkumar Sharma has explained why the Indian skipper faced the issue and struggled to leave deliveries outside the off-stump. He also spoke about the change he made to get over the habit.

Speaking on Youtube channel Khelneeti, Sharma said, “Virat Kohli made a similar mistake in England in 2014. I told him that as you are going more towards the off-stump, you think that you will be able to play all the balls.

“This is why he was not able to leave the ball well. Now, he is more at the middle and off-stump. Because of this, he is more aware of his off-stump and hence doesn’t look to play the balls that are on the 6th stump.”

Talking about the match, Kohli scored 79 in the first innings and was India’s top scorer. In the second innings, Kohli is standing strong at the lunch break on Day 3 with a score of 28 and already played 127 deliveries.
